The
Bolivar Theater was inaugurated in 1933 and was designed by
the famous Philadelphia-based architectural firm Hoffman &
Henon. Its doors opened as a center for cultural events, the
performing arts, and film. Between the 1930s and 1970s,
the Bolivar was a reference point for culture in Ecuador.
The intention of the designers of such grand theaters was
to inspire fantasy. The Bolivar reflects such an intention,
one in which the reality created inside its walls provides
us with marvel and memory and allows us to live in a world
of imagination.
At the time of inauguration, the Bolivar could seat 2,400,
which was later reduced to 2,200. The fire 1999 initially
reduced the seating capacity to 750 , however this has subequently
been expanded to 1,090.
